If you are serving them, you stand to the right and work your way around the table clockwise.

I am right handed, therefore I serve from the right. But, if you are left handed then you should probably serve from the left. There isn't any real "correct" way to serve, just whatever you are comfortable with.

The rule of thumb is serve right remove left.

I have always read that one serves from the left and clears from the right.

Many moons ago, I worked as a waiter for a very formal banquet house. We were 'trained' by a professional chef on servicing tables.

Inasmuch, I will both serve and remove items from the right-hand side.

Sorry, Sam, but you are wrong. This is something I know b/c I am from the Emily Post generation and my mom raised me to know stuff like this:

"lay from the left, remove from the right"

So bring in the new food and serve it from the "eater's" left side and when s/he is finished, come to the right and remove, take away the dirty plate and utensils.

Just go right over the top of the person that way there is no confusion. The person can't say if you're right or wrong because you didn't go either way, you went down the middle and happened to knock them unconcious in the process so there is absolutely no complaining problem solved:)
